Birthday pros and cons

by rosclarke @ 2007-04-16 - 10:49:58

Cons:

(i) 2 inches of snow that fell last night
(ii) Comcast aren't sending anyone to fix our internet connection until Wednesday Comcast are complete imbeciles who know nothing about anything. They sent someone on Monday (without warning us, so I had to rush home from the library to let them in. They did various things and proclaimed the problem solved. Only we still can't get the internet and now they say they can't send anyone until Thursday. Added to which, they had a problem so that the TV wasn't working last night either. Huh.
(iii) So no Skype chats since they frown on that kind of thing in the library

Pros:

(i) 3 parcels from home full of British goodies
(ii) I've lost count of how many Facebook messages
(iii) A fun weekend in Connecticut (photos to come)
(iv) A lovely conversation with Matthew and Karen yesterday
(v) An amazing online party involving me being rescued from Ashby Castle where I was being held by Lord Voldemort (best not to ask)!
(vi) A DVD of the new version of Persuasion

And a birthday poem which I've always loved (though it bears no reflection on any gift I've been given this year):

The Hippopotamus' Birthday

He has opened all his parcels but the largest and the last;
His hopes are at their highest and his heart is beating fast.
O happy Hippopotamus, what lovely gift is here?
He cuts the string. The world stands still. A pair of boots appear!

O little Hippopotamus, the sorrows of the small!
He dropped two tears to mingle with the flowing Senegal;
And the 'Thank you' that he uttered was the saddest ever heard
In the Senegambian jungle from the mouth of beast or bird.

Gosh--according to Google, me and you are the only people in the world who have this poem posted. I memorized it in second/poss. third grade at the Oporto British School in 1974, and your version tallies exactly with the poem as I remembered it!
